Stylianos Spyrou was born in Athens in 1931. He studied Byzantine painting and worked with artist Fotis Kontoglou from 1949 to 1952. From 1953 to 1956 he collaborated with artist Stefanos Almaliotis, using the decorecolla technique, to paint the Upcoming Attractions billboards for the Orpheus Movie Theater in Athens.
He concentrated on abstract expressionist painting and was represented exclusively abroad by the El Greco Gallery in Montreal, Canada. In 1961 the artist assumed the position of official iconographer of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America in New York where he remained permanently.
He studied architecture at the City University of New York and modern painting at the Art Students League from 1962 to 1964 and formed an art studio with sculptor Nikos Ikaris in New York in 1964.
